A book a week.

That’s what I’ve promised myself  — that I would try to finish at the very least, one book a week this 2013.  And so I’ve decided to begin with a seemingly thin book but one that I’m finding to be loaded with gems of wisdom.  “Help, Thanks, Wow – The Three Essential Prayers” by Anne Lamott who is my all-time favorite author and inspiration.

If you’ve never read her, you are missing half your life.

I was first introduced to Anne when a dear friend gifted me with a copy of her manual on writing, “Bird by Bird” and from then I was hooked.  This latest book from Anne is actually an easy-read that you can finish in a day, or perhaps even in one sitting.  However, I often found myself doing two things — falling asleep from exhaustion, or stopping to re-read and digest what she says because she always tells it like it is and she is so insightful!  In true Anne Lamott fashion, she talks about spirituality and prayer in the most irreverent, heartwarming but always thought-provoking manner.

Anne always simultaneously comforts, inspires and entertains.

My favorite passage so far is this :

There’s freedom in hitting bottom, in seeing that you won’t be able to save or rescue your daughter, her spouse, his parents, or your career, relief in admitting you’ve reached the place of great unknowing. This is where restoration can begin, because when you’re still in the state of trying to fix the unfixable, everything bad is engaged: the chatter of your mind, the tension of your physiology, all the trunks and wheel-ons you carry from the past. It’s exhausting, crazy-making.

Help. Help us walk through this. Help us come through.

It is the first great prayer.

  1. hey, Kate. i know it’s a tad late greeting you a happy new year but still, i’d like to greet you! 😀

i am currently reading the Game of Thrones book three. my daughter gave me a tablet as Christmas gift and there was an e-book entitled The White Fang and got immersed and left the Game of Thrones but promised myself that I will finish it. Downloaded four more e-books and I finished With a Little Help. I am guilty not going back to that first book. 😀
